'Fender Bender' Short Response
September 29,2009
The short story, 'Fender Bender, ' by Ramon 'Tiangus' Perez,
portrays the prejudiced state in which the contemporary society in
America regards illegally immigrated peoples. The anecdotal
experience which Perez divulges furthermore demonstrates an inter-
cultural conflict between Mexican immigrants: those who have become
Americanized and those who have clung onto the the cultural
idiosyncrosies of Mexico. In the short story, this conflict is catalyzed
over language-preference divergencies between a 'Chicano' cop and

Jonathan Nathan Go Do Your Homework
JONATHAN NATHAN GO DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
Little Jonathan Nathan looked at his mama.
“Juan wasn’t at school today.
His family are illegal immigrants. They’re being deported.”
“Good, they have no business being here.”
“He was looking through the fence at school,
And he was crying. Why was he sad? ”
“He’s being sent back to Mexico where he belongs.
You know he and his family are here illegally.”
“Are we here legally? ”
“Why Jonathan Nathan, of course we are! ”
And, I am a Daughter of the Revolution.
This country was built on such as we.”
“Were we here before anyone else? ”
“Well, no, there were some Indians and Mexicans.
But they don’t count. We count.”

People thought me a bit strange at first; a blond haired, blue-eyed Norwegian who sang Mexican folk songs, but I used it to my advantage and got a job. And so the music became my ticket to education.

A Mexican girl, a pretty young lass,
Ate so many beans, she bloated with gas.
Barking spiders was what she'd often say,
Then turn on her heels and, walk swiftly away,
Very rapidly I must confess.

A Flower To Auroville Mother-45
Daisy Fleabane, (Hairy Fleabane, Erigeron bellidioides)
Mexican Fleabane, (Erigeron karvinskianus)
Oxeye Daisy(Leucanthemum vulgare)
Daisy or Daisylike, so confusing
Related how you all, so muddled..
One there's worldover sprawling
Leaves elliptic in hairy spread
Buds bunched together budding
Blooming white to pink faded
Her name, Mexican Fleabane...
And Hairy Fleabane hilly spread
Wild and fierce all blanketing
White to pink yellow centered..
Oxeye Daisy Oh, one more joining
Rhizomes and rosette all spread
white around yellow disk raying

Day of the Refugios
In Mexico and Latin America, celebrating one's
Saint's day instead of one's birthday is common.
I was born in Nogales, Arizona,
On the border between
Mexico and the United States.
The places in between places
They are like little countries
Themselves, with their own holidays
Taken a little from everywhere.
My Fourth of July is from childhood,
Childhood itself a kind of country, too.
It's a place that's far from me now,
A place I'd like to visit again.
The Fourth of July takes me there.
