Patrick White

And Though It's Dark And Cold Now

And though it’s dark and cold now
in this ice palace of broken windows
that don’t know whether to bite their lips
or cut their wrists like a suicide
that took it one step too far
like an eclipse that went into exile
I remember the swell and release
of your breasts in moonlight,
rising and falling like a lunar tide.
I remember coiling my finger around
the soft chestnut tendrils of your hair
as if I were dialling a long distance call
to someone I knew light years from here
who was living her dream
like the black sheep of a shepherd moon
she was giving her life up to.
You were an atmosphere on the nightshift
on the intensive care unit of a hospital
applying a cool poultice of moonlight
to the volcanic burns

Don't Eat The Yellow Snow

Dreamed I was an eskimo
Frozen wind began to blow
Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below
It was a hundred degrees below zero...
And my mama cried
And my mama cried
Nanook, a-no-no
Nanook, a-no-no
Dont be a naughty eskimo
Save your money, dont go to the show
Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said ho, ho
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
Watch out where the huskies go, and dont you eat that yellow snow
Watch out where the huskies go, and dont you eat that yellow snow

Southbound

The boom time it is over
A ghost town is all thats left here
The gold rush it is over
And depression days draw near
Tonight after sundown
Im going to pack my case
I leave without a sound
Disappear without a trace
Im going southbound
Drifting like a drover
Chasing my career
From the ships docked in the harbour
New horizons will appear
Tumbling with the tumbleweed
Down the open road
Taking only what I need
Before my head explodes
Im going southbound
Hey, youre not getting any younger
The wild west has already been won

The Call of the Winds

Ho, come out with the wind of spring,
And step it blithely in woodlands waking;
Friend am I of each growing thing
From the gray sod into sunshine breaking;
Mine is the magic of twilights dim,
Of violets blue on the still pool's rim,
Mine is the breath of the blossoms young
Sweetest of fragrances storied or sung
Come, ye earth-children, weary and worn,
I will lead you over the hills of morn.

Ho, come out with the summer wind,
And loiter in meadows of ripening clover,
Where the purple noons are long and kind,
And the great white clouds drift fleecily over.
Mine is immortal minstrelsy,
The fellowship of the rose and bee,
Beguiling laughter of willowed rills,
The rejoicing of pines on inland hills,
Come, ye earth-children, by dale and stream,

February 14-Your Birthday

The whisper of your name crossed the night
In a gentle breeze a reminder became mine-
O'er this star spangled galaxy of midnight
Long past decades O' time;
A spiritual union of love we were
So long in your arms O' gentle caress
Magical-mystical first love divine-
The Northern Lights claims you as best;
Golden in extent and all reason
From era's of love over spent
Comes this gentle whisper O' your name once again
Filled with desires O' longings intent;
You were my first love 'tis true
And beloved, you never really knew
Today, i am just a simple dreamer
With overwhelming memories O' you;
So far away-nestled in the Evergreen
Steeped in a Greek refined domain-
'Tis upon your roads of paved love O' forever
I am blessed in sweet loves-eternal flame;

Calgary of the plains

Not of the seething cities with their swarming human hives,
Their fetid airs, their reeking streets, their dwarfed and poisoned lives,
Not of the buried yesterdays, but of the days to be,
The glory and the gateway of the yellow West is she.

The Northern Lights dance down her plains with soft and silvery feet,
The sunrise gilds her prairies when the dawn and daylight meet;
Along her level lands the fitful southern breezes sweep,
And beyond her western windows the sublime old mountains sleep.

The Redman haunts her portals, and the Paleface treads her streets,
The Indian's stealthy footstep with the course of commerce meets,
And hunters whisper vaguely of the half forgotten tales
Of phantom herds of bison lurking on her midnight trails.

Not hers the lore of olden lands, their laurels and their bays;
But what are these, compared to one of all her perfect days?
For naught can buy the jewel that upon her forehead lies--
The cloudless sapphire Heaven of her territorial skies.

Starrider

I stole a ride on a passing star
Not knowing where I was going
How near or how far
Through years of light, lands of future and past
Until the heavenly gates
Were sighted at last
Starrider, rider, rider
Take me to the stars
Starrider, rider, rider
Show me where you are
Northern lights flashed by
And then they were gone
And as old stars would die
So the new ones were born
And ever on I sailed
Celestial ways
And in the light of my years
Shone the rest of my days
Speed increasing
All control is in the hands of those who know

Every Beat Of My Heart

(r. stewart, k. savigar)
Through these misty eyes
I see lonely skies
Lonely road to babylon
Wheres my family
And my country
Heaven knows where I belong
Pack my bags tonight
Heres one jacobite
Who must leave or surely die
Put me on a train
In the pouring rain
Say farewell but dont say goodbye
Chorus:
Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, thats where I want to be
Every beat of my heart
Tears me further apart
Im lost and alone in the dark
Im going home

Hope Is a Tattered Flag

Hope is a tattered flag and a dream of time.
Hope is a heartspun word, the rainbow, the shadblow in white
The evening star inviolable over the coal mines,
The shimmer of northern lights across a bitter winter night,
The blue hills beyond the smoke of the steel works,
The birds who go on singing to their mates in peace, war, peace,
The ten-cent crocus bulb blooming in a used-car salesroom,
The horseshoe over the door, the luckpiece in the pocket,
The kiss and the comforting laugh and resolve—
Hope is an echo, hope ties itself yonder, yonder.
The spring grass showing itself where least expected,
The rolling fluff of white clouds on a changeable sky,
The broadcast of strings from Japan, bells from Moscow,
Of the voice of the prime minister of Sweden carried
Across the sea in behalf of a world family of nations
And children singing chorals of the Christ child
And Bach being broadcast from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
And tall skyscrapers practically empty of tenants
And the hands of strong men groping for handholds
And the Salvation Army singing God loves us….

Even If Im Gone

Every time I go away
You know I want to stay
I feel like Im turning to
I try to overcome this pain
Theres no easy way
Im already missing you
As I look out over the northern lights
I can almost feel you here tonight (2x)
Even if Im gone
And it feels like forever
I pray us soon be home
In your loving arms again
And even if Im gone
Theres a part of you still with me
Close my eyes and I think how beautiful
And I know Im not alone.
So Im trying to be strong
I know I carry on
I still feel the emptiness
If only I can find a way

Wamblee

High up on a rocky crag,
Wamblee, near to the cliff edge
sat cross legged in a circle on the ground
calling softly to the four winds.

His long plaits, threaded with silver
lay beneath feathers running down his back.
Far below him the canyon stretched out
dusty and red hot.

As the hypnotic chant of his words
caught the warm air riding the canyon top
his heart took flight
soaring above the high dusty plain.

Born on the wind,
his eagle wings outstretched
he sailed aloft snow covered mountains
glinting in the light of Grandfather Sun.

The Open Road

THE roads of the Sea
Are thronged with merchantmen;
East and West, North and South
They go and come again.

All precious merchandise
They bear in their hold:
Lest the people be starving
In the night and cold.

Now tell me, good merchants,
How this thing can be
That the white ships are thronging
The roads of the sea?

For there's death in the skies
And there's death on the earth;
And men talked of famine
And a frozen hearth.

To Erika Lie

When Norse nature's dower
Tones will paint with power,
There is more than mountain-heights that tower,-
Plains spread wide-extending,
Whereon at their wending
Summer nights soft dews are sending.

Forests great are growing,
And in long waves going
Glommen's valley fill to overflowing,-
There are green slopes vernal,
Glad with joy fraternal,
Open to the light supernal.

For revealing wholly
All things fine and holy-
As in sunshine birds are soaring slowly,
Or, their spells transmitting,
Northern Lights are flitting,-
None but maiden-hands are fitting.

Henry David Thoreau

Away! Away! Away! Away!

Away! away! away! away!
Ye have not kept your secret well,
I will abide that other day,
Those other lands ye tell.

Has time no leisure left for these,
The acts that ye rehearse?
Is not eternity a lease
For better deeds than verse?

‘Tis sweet to hear of heroes dead,
To know them still alive,
But sweeter if we earn their bread,
And in us they survive.

Our life should feed the springs of fame
With a perennial wave,
As ocean feeds the babbling founts
Which find it in their grave.

Threads Of Passion

You ignite Northern Lights in my universe
Like a gift from the goddess Aurora
With you I float in cool azure oceans
Aware of the darkness in the depths below

You are sailing on still waters waiting
Anticipating the storms from the horizon
With thorns of sea cucumbers invading
I inflict puncture wounds seeping surrender

You help me float out into the distance
Waiting with hourglasses for my arrival
With the white foam of breaking waves
I create fluffy dream clouds of aspiration

You set the sea surf by my heartbeat
Letting the tide surround me with silence
Out of reefs I built fragile castles on sand
That are later destroyed by infinite currents

Party Down

I know the night is silent Ill be insane
Got to find a new place where I can hide from the rain
Ill wait for the weekend to get wasted and then
Gonna get on up so I can fall down again
Party down...party down....party down
This world is crazy, everybody party down
You bring the bottle baby Ill bring the glass
Ill be the animal, you can be the class
I know that memory that can shed us some light
This kind of magic keeps me flyin all night
Party down....party down....party down
This world is crazy, lets all party down
Im just tryin to feel better
I just wanna feel better
Dont waste your life away
Eeverybody party down
Gonna shimmer my shoes on down to the red dog saloon
Just waitin for the sunset to give way to the moon
Been sleepin all day so I can party all night
Hallucinating at the northern lights

Mother Nature Can Be Fickle

Winter’s cold is Mother Nature’s way
Of saying, lie with me now, lay your head on my breast
It’s snow, a blanket under which to lay
Neath a crystal cover, enjoying winter's cold caress

Frost rimed windows … Mother Nature’s art
Icy abstractions painted with frosty finesse
Crystalline concoctions that form only a part
Of Mother Natures wonderful winter largesse

Ice coated limbs of slope shouldered trees
droop drowsily down as if fallen asleep
Unable to sway in winter’s frigid breeze
Appear as white mounds, when the snow drifts deep

The stillness one hears on cold winter nights
Broken by the sudden crack of ice laden boughs
The ethereal essence of undulating northern lights
Headlights in the sky for Nature’s snowplows

A Love Song

There's a wren in a willow wood
Flies so high, sings so good
And he brings to you, what he sings to you
And the love in his lullaby
Seems to tell me if I try
I could fly for you
Lover I wanna try for you cause
I wanna sing you a love song
I wanna rock you in my arms all night long
I wanna get to know you
I wanna show you the peaceful feeling of my home
Summer thunder on moon-bright days
Northern lights in the skys ablaze
I'll bring to you, if you let me sing to you
Silver wings in a firery sky
Show the trail of our love and
I wanna sing to you, love is what i bring to you
I wanna sing to you
Oh, I wanna sing you a love song
I wanna rock you in my arms all night long

The Cremation Of Sam McGee

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows.
Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows.
He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he'd often say in his homely way that he'd "sooner live in hell".

On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail.
Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail.
If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see;
It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee.

And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow,
