My friend, I Should Have Said

He dragged me with him all the way,
and held my hand meticulously to make me stay,
and to appear like he has forgotten that he will never be alone,
but I knew that my place was his house, and his my home.

So much similar, like almost same,
with the difference of just a name,
we played soccer in the alleys as we grew,
the matches we won were less than a few.

Nevertheless, we never played for victory,
for the victories were so queer in our history,
since we helped each other, in sorrow, in pain,
like we wanted to be like this, in havoc or in gain.

But the life wreaked havoc, I cried and paid,
the price of my chum, but the decision was made,
you will have to leave, sooner or late,
so tell your sidekick how much you love him, before he gets checkmate.

Chess and Me

You have problems with troubles and solutions to them,
Examples are furious and minded are the peolple affronted.
I accost a few strangers and attack them with nuggets of gold,
Whilst he kills my riches and my royalty.

I deserve to win and to work so long that natural chess
Is inbuilt and ready to play enough of.

Opportunity And Ability

I was in Osmena Park
one sharp noon

Two twilight-aged folks
were talking while playing
chess board game

one said to his opponent

my son has the ability
but my son has no opportunity

and the other said

my son has opportunity
but my son lacks ability

I had learned

The changing course

Help me solve my case,
I'm problematic, help me
reanimate, I need a
russet rush hour to help me
out of this game.
It's no chess, no football, no dancing.
It's but a trial not in court
that you're handling.
I wanna change tack into a bay,
a course directly sewing loose and fasten
pieces of words to be free and solve my case.

Standard between the equals

A speaker and a listener, poor
In language, might make mistakes in their talks.
Mistakes are not known to them as mistakes.
Both enjoy the talk without any itch.

A raw woman appeals to a raw man.
Two children and two adults play chess.
Some sing to friends and some in a concert.
Standard is according to the circle.

Who Is Having The Fun Here?

What are you doing?

'Give me a few seconds.
Someone has me on hold.'

On hold?

'Yes.
I've been waiting for a couple of minutes,
For someone to explain to me...
Why they believe I am not qualified.'

Qualified?
To do what?

'Qualified to have intelligence.
Because of my...
Well,
You know...
The obvious.'

Sea of empty space..?

Tonight I saw an ocean
Passing beneath the moon
In zig zag slow motion
Then a whale was strewn..?

Coup de grâce
Sea of empty space..?

The moon was gone!
Like a white chess pawn.

Like bread a carp swallows
And then it just wallows
Dimly into the night
Into those disk waves so trite.

Coup de grâce
Sea of empty space..?

Black and White

Black and White By Dilantha Gunawardana

A story in black and white

Black and white;
Black in white; perhaps black on white;
White embedded in black;
Black around white, sprinkle or a speckle even a trickle;
Shadows on the porch on an eerie white night;
A piano keyboard, intertwined in ebony and white;
A checker or a droughts board or lofty chess pieces;
Black stallions and white mares;
All galloping in the pursuit of unending happiness;
A flow of nimbus with a speckle of cumulus;
Showers of blessings, black rain and even snow and hale;
The smog that kisses the snow flake clouds;
Chimneys and embers inside snowy winter bungalows;
We begin in ashes, black residual ashes;
Connected to a white umbilical cord;
We are born white, virgins in every sphere of life;

The chess board is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But we also know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance.

Back

Keep the tale, it's free, just bring the book back.
Eat the fish, but bring the line and hook back.

No one out here lives by bread alone;
relish the coq au vin, but send the cook back.

Don't let a warning chill your lovely days,
just lock the door, please. Don't invite the crook back.

Accept this praise for a game well played, my friend-
and checkmate. Much too late to move that rook back.

What makes you so sure your puny dam
could hold even this innocuous little brook back?

Sure, you were young, and clueless, and unnerved.
Too late to win the dear one you forsook back.

A day will come when you'll be held to account
for every gift you gave and then took back.

My Dream

My dream is slowly drifting near, then
stands still, aloof hanging like a pear
let me touch as it nears
let me indulge in its thousand flavours
and sleep in her realm for a thousand years

in all my tears, through all those fears
it is this dream I will savour
The beat in my chess enclosed that dream
keepin me alive - only to dream again.

Peace can be found

‘Peace is when time does not matter
as it passes by’.
[with nothing to do, I pass my Sundays]
Peace is when means does not matter
as it passes out.
[I spend for my girl friend in outings]
Peace is when the result does not bother
as it comes out.
[I spend time playing chess with my son.]
Peace is when time, means and the result
do not bind one.

Selective

Those that write...
Know there is no easy way to it,
To get it done.
But to do it.

Plagiarist are quick to quote,
And lift whole passages.
With attempts to have their theft flow.
As if one's style can not be recognized.

One who writes,
Knows this upon sight.
It is similar to a game of chess...
Played out like life.
And at one's best.

The more one becomes aware of the game...
It is not who plays,
But how well they do it.
With a signature imprint that is left,

What I Want Is A Starfish

What I want is a starfish
that can pry open the mouth of a word
not for the pearl but the tongue that said it.
What I want is an irrelevancy of slurred minerals,
a negligence of light, a torn candy-wrapper,
a whistle without chrome peas,
but what I want is a footprint that isn't my own
on a desolate beach out of the grasp
of the raking tide that sweeps
the lifeboats up with the garbage. What I want is free,
and that's why no one ever gets it,
when the world is placed in their open hands,
and not seeing their own reflection
or the rag of their wounded shadow
wearing their face like the sky they've always known,
deluded by the cheiromancy of their own entangled lifelines
cries out in their denuded emptiness
that nothing is for free. What I want
is not knowing what I want
on certain lost islands chipped off

Checkmate

'D-minished! '

Plummeted is more appropriate.
Like a vanishing of prerequisites.
A total convening of mindlessness applied.
A substitution for common sense...
With no jurisdiction for the application of thought.
A total disregard for humanity.
A total acceptance of deception.
And a total...

'Checkmate!
You want to play another game?
Or have you run out of strategies?
Since none is working.
Has worked...
Or seem can work! '

Please!
Set up the board.

Rumi

Ode 1373

I was dead, then alive.
Weeping, then laughing.

The power of love came into me,
and I became fierce like a lion,
then tender like the evening star.

He said, ‘You’re not mad enough.
You don’t belong in this house.’

I went wild and had to be tied up.
He said, ‘Still not wild enough
to stay with us!’

I broke through another layer
into joyfulness.

He said, ‘Its not enough.’
I died.

(V – 1988) Fighting Fate

Oh, things out of control we call real fate
For factors far unknown too decide our state!
But things there are we must not see as mere fate;
Such things if controlled can oh, alter our state!

No thunder or tyrant is ever such fate
If faced with courage and soon held to checkmate!
Oh, thou art the architect of thy own fate!
So fight well with will and thus safeguard thy state!

At times we may fall to some strange, cruel fate;
By them should never our will still abate!
With arrows of resolve and faith, fight thy fate!
Oh, give no space ever to stand or to wait!

So bow not or falter before any fate;
Oh, fear and despair will thy fate aggravate!
Grim panic and anguish will strengthen our fate;
They make us, oh, lick a time unduly late!

Listen, Learn, Read On

In ages past when spells were cast
In a time of men in steel
When a man was taught no special thing
It was all done by feel
So listen, so learn, so read on
You gotta turn the page, read the book of taliesyn
Hear the song of lovely joan
Her sound so sweet and clear
In the courtroom of the king
Among children and the peers
So listen, so learn, so read on
You gotta turn the page, read the book of taliesyn
now hear ye the words of taliesyn,
On the foaming beach of the ocean,
In the day of trouble,
I shall be of more service to thee
Than three hundred salmon...
The hare he bounds across the page
Past castles white and fair
Past dreaming chessmen on their boards

It Is Difficult Being An Adult

I return exactly what I get.
If my name is not on it with respect.

'You know that is not acceptable? '

Acceptable or not,
I am not keeping what isn't mine.
And it is difficult being an adult,
When many who look like they are...
Prefer to play checkers.

And you?
You play 'no' games?

'Yes I do.
I enjoy the playing of chess.'

Very few are patient.
And haven't learned to play that yet.
