Brent River Bride
Flow proudly fair river,
For one who fell under
Your spell was the liver
Doc, Gershon - asunder
Found all his plans, muddled
By nymphs of the water -
He greatly befuddled
Then married the daughter
Of Count Joe of Wandle
Far south of the city
And went on to fondle
Her milk flowing titty.
I send this wet letter
To Brentische planners;
Such amour is better
Than yekkishe manners.

I detest spinach because of its utterly amorphous character....the only good, noble and edible thing to be found in that sordid nourishment is the sand.

We couldn’t find spinach anywhere
We couldn’t find spinach anywhere,
not at the Fruit and Veg
or other green grocers
or even at chain stores
like Pick-a-Pay, Checkers,
Shoprite and Woolworths.
“It must be out of season, ”
I told my darling
who had returned the green beans
and so we didn’t have
any green vegetables
and joking I told her
that we will get scurvy.
Passing a traffic light
in the inner city
she saw a hawker
selling vegetables
with packets and packets of spinach.

Fortunately I am not one of those beings who when they smile are apt to expose remnants, however small, of horrible and degrading spinach clinging to their teeth.

Canned Peaches
When we got to eat...
We ate spinach, peas and beets,
With sweet canned peaches!
No steak was plated!
But we knew the taste of it,
When mom fixed us cornbread.
And mama said,
Biscuits dripping dumplings...
May be next!
And on Sundays...
We thanked the Lord that week,
We even got fed!
When it came to treats,
We licked the spoon
That dipped those sweet canned peaches!

My plants
My plants
are eaten
by all kinds of vermin.
There are golden beetles
that reaps
the leaves of the beans,
brown buzzing beetles turning in the air
around the tomatoes,
snails that can’t wait
and demolish the leaves
of beans, spinach
and tomatoes.
Indian miners
that feast in their beaks
as if every thing belongs to them.
Even poison that I spread out

Mike On The Mic
I met this girl last night with a peculiar cackle
I laid the bait and then she took the tackle
Had too much to drink at the Red Lobster
Now the room is spinning around like the blades of a helicopter
I never met a girl that was too finicky
If the press has their way then they're going to finish me
You might know this but you've never been this see
If I ate spinach then I'd be called Spinach D
I shed light like cats shed fur
Ride around town like Raymond Burr
I'm so high that they call me Your Highness
If you don't know me then pardon my shyness
I live in the Village wherever I go I walk to
Keepin' my friends around so I have someone to talk to
I play my music loud because you know it's got clout to it
It's a trip it's got a funky beat and I can bug out to it

Vegetables
Eat a tomato and you'll turn red
(I don't think that's really so);
Eat a carrot and you'll turn orange
(Still and all, you never know);
Eat some spinach and you'll turn green
(I'm not saying that it's true
But that's what I heard, and so
I thought I'd pass it on to you).

a Thunderstorm claps outside
There’s a thunder storm that claps outside
and lightning bolt after lightning bolt flashes past
and the first big drops fall
slamming on the roof
and there are cats and dogs
that finds shelter
and cosiness inside,
but it’s far better
to sit right against you
and to get a portion
of your own
spinach and feta quiche

A Voodoo Poet
Burning the Cross where Jesus dies,
He mounts the awful, giddy stair
Where evil spirits paralyse
The Serpent in its hidden lair.
Beneath the spinach of the skies
He combs the charcoal from his hair
With words that somehow symbolise
The agony of God's despair.
But April monkeys will appease
The cancer of his twisted care
And poisoned rabbits of disease
Reveal the answer to his prayer.

Aardvarks
The aardvarks came out one by one,
Their buttocks glinting in the sun,
And each was gay and free and wise
And each had eaten twelve mince pies.
They did not run, they did not walk,
They did not seem to want to talk,
They sat and rolled their gleaming eyes
Beneath the spinach of the skies.
O Aardvark! You're a friend of mine,
You turned my water into wine,
And when I'd nearly lost my soul
You saved me with a sausage roll!
