Long lives aren't natural. We forget that senior citizens are as much an invention as toasters or penicillin.

If we stop exploring space, we're going to lose the same part of us that found vaccines and penicillin, the part that searches for cures to cancer and AIDS.

i agree
that if from the moldy
bread they
produce penicillin
what more from
'out of you '
can they bring?
you are not
the moldy bread
i supposed
i wish i am.

Smokeless Zone
Im living in my smokeless zone
My house is not a happy home
I got to do something for I kick the bucket
Im living in this smokeless zone
I clean my dusty window sills
Everything I grow it kills
I dont want to stay in this street any longer
Living in this smokeless zone
Englands green, once so pleasant land
Living on a time bomb yeah
The whole damn place is going to turn to sand
Bah bah
I cough upon my wheezy chest
My penicillin does its best
Theres only one cure for an unhealthy body
Get out of this smokeless zone

Doctors
They work with herbs
and penicillin
They work with gentleness
and the scalpel.
They dig out the cancer,
close an incision
and say a prayer
to the poverty of the skin.
They are not Gods
though they would like to be;
they are only a human
trying to fix up a human.
Many humans die.
They die like the tender,
palpitating berries
in November.
But all along the doctors remember:
First do no harm.
They would kiss if it would heal.
It would not heal.

Fracture
This constant ache
is my leg's message to me.
'Hello. Hello. Hello.
You're getting there,' it says,
'step by step.'
Legs aren't stars
which sputter out
& go on gleaming anyway.
I've lived, of course,
with phantom limbs
but this fracture
doesn't point to
amputation. No.
It hisses at something
much more final.
Skin lantern,
necklace of teeth,

Its Your Turn
Up here on the ledge
Up here on the ledge
Im getting pushed to the edge
Im getting pushed to the edge
People line up behind me to step into my shoes,
People line up behind me to step into my shoes,
Up here in the precipice
Up here in the precipice
Im getting close to my nemesis
Im getting close to my nemesis
People fighting each other to jump into my blues
People fighting each other to jump into my blues
Theres a young kid inside me somewhere
Theres a young kid inside me somewhere
He stays up all night, a vampire that never dies,
He stays up all night, a vampire that never dies,
With the blood and the moon in his eyes
With the blood and the moon in his eyes
I hear his voice when Im comin down,
I hear his voice when Im comin down,

Chance Interruption Chants Current Version
Think how initial trains of thought
may be derailed from one-track aim
by some coincidence and brought
to change conclusions. Thus the same
words won't be written, inklings caught,
cards drawn, refused, and thus life's game
crests forward causal waves that court
adjusted emphasis, acclaim.
Missed punctuation may abort
sense, pride sap, map ride, conquer shame.
Experiments dismissed, rewrought,
gave penicillin claim to fame.
Confronted with life's puzzle we
prepare discontinuity.
Think how initial chains of thought
may be diverted from first frame,
cue to new wavelengths taut,
intense sensations to proclaim
as apt path once thought peril fraught,

Androcles and the Lion
ANDROCLES AND THE LION
Every verse acts as shell for fair moral, a skel -
eton which we expand when councilling,
wanton worries dispel, (we can scan well and spell) ,
through transcendent end line linking illing!
Lordly lion’s large jaws are unused, like his paws,
'til his lady striped zebra’s sent spilling,
then he rages and roars, rips raw prey with sharp claws,
but it's mostly to show flesh is willing.
In the main, mighty mane and earthshaking refrain
give the lie - ‘spite his timbre so thrilling,
for with pride by his side he can set pride aside,
letting others continue the killing.
Every night by lush well loud flush larynx will swell,
while at jungle rill thirstily swilling,
yet all know very well ‘tis to show lioncel
how to act, an example instilling.

Manuelzinho
[Brazil. A friend of the writer is speaking.]
Half squatter, half tenant (no rent)—
a sort of inheritance; white,
in your thirties now, and supposed
to supply me with vegetables,
but you don't; or you won't; or you can't
get the idea through your brain—
the world's worst gardener since Cain.
Titled above me, your gardens
ravish my eyes. You edge
the beds of silver cabbages
with red carnations, and lettuces
mix with alyssum. And then
umbrella ants arrive,
or it rains for a solid week
and the whole thing's ruined again
and I buy you more pounds of seeds,
imported, guaranteed,

Rapunzel
A woman
who loves a woman
is forever young.
The mentor
and the student
feed off each other.
Many a girl
had an old aunt
who locked her in the study
to keep the boys away.
They would play rummy
or lie on the couch
and touch and touch.
Old breast against young breast…
Let your dress fall down your shoulder,
come touch a copy of you
for I am at the mercy of rain,
for I have left the three Christs of Ypsilanti
for I have left the long naps of Ann Arbor
and the church spires have turned to stumps.

Red Riding Hood
Many are the deceivers:
The suburban matron,
proper in the supermarket,
list in hand so she won't suddenly fly,
buying her Duz and Chuck Wagon dog food,
meanwhile ascending from earth,
letting her stomach fill up with helium,
letting her arms go loose as kite tails,
getting ready to meet her lover
a mile down Apple Crest Road
in the Congregational Church parking lot.
Two seemingly respectable women
come up to an old Jenny
and show her an envelope
full of money
and promise to share the booty
if she'll give them ten thou
as an act of faith.
Her life savings are under the mattress
covered with rust stains
