Maui Movements

Native performers,
Proud of their rich heritage,
Help traditions live.
Young hula dancers,
Dressed in colorful attire,
Dance with hips and hands.
Gently swaying hips,
Combined with silent language
Of the dancer's hands,
Beckon us to watch
As history comes alive
In Maui movements.
Older performers
Translate every movement --
Help us understand.
Let's understand them
And LEARN, from Maui movements,
How history lives !

The reason I didn't fly over from Maui at their beck and call is my wife was about to have a baby at any time. Those guys knew that. These guys would not compromise and meet me halfway.

Lying over the water

The Wings of the Morning

It is quiet, even peaceful here,
out past Hana on Maui’s Isle.
Near Palapala Ho'omau Church,
This is where I have come to bide.
To listen to the Ocean’s roar,
to find what peace is left to me.
I could not hide from you, oh Lord
Not in the uttermost depths of the sea
My time is fast approaching when
I will lose this quarrel with disease.
The air is warm and liquid here,
It has a perfumed fragrance that
would bid a younger man to stay.
but Cancer bids me to fade away
As I will, I’ve seen the stone,
simple enough to mark my space
In the Churches’ graveyard here
my friend Sam has made a place

That Film About the Poets

Of the one who lived in paris
& made movies about the art world,
living in the pompadour
of stained glass once seen
in architectural digest.

Or the one whose soul was born
In a concentration camp.
Hitler’s worst nightmare of a jew
Who could out-write the nibelungenlied.

Alas, I am too fresh faced.
I must wrinkle for a very long time.
My wheelchair is not enough.

The Worlds Greatest Smoke Off

In the laid back California town of sunny San Raphael
Lived a girl named Pearly Sweetcake,
You probably knew her well
She was stoned 15 of her 18 years
And her story was widely told,
That she could smoke 'em faster
Than any dude could roll

Well her legend finally reached New York
That grove street walk up flat
Where dwelt the Calistoge Kid,
a beatnik from the past
He'd been rolling dope since time began
And he took a cultured toke and said
'Jim, I can rollem faster than any chick can smoke'

So a note gets sent to San Raphael
For the Championship of the World
The Kid demands a smoke off
'Well bring him on' sayz Pearl

Maui Victor

Unhewn in quarry lay the Parian stone,
   Ere hands, god-guided, of Praxiteles
Might shape the Cnidian Venus. Long ungrown
   The ivory was which, chiselled, robbed of ease
   Pygmalion, sculptor-lover. Now are these,
The stone and ivory, immortal made.
   The golden apples of Hesperides
Shall never, scattered, in blown dust be laid,
   Till Time, the dragon-guard, has lived his last decade.

The Cnidian Venus, Galatea's shape,
   A wondering world beheld, as we behold, --
Here, in blest isles beyond the stormy Cape,
   Where man the new land dowers with the old,
   Are neither marble shapes nor fruits of gold,
Nor white-limbed maidens, queened enchantress-wise;
   Here, Nature's beauties no vast ruins enfold,
No glamour fills her such as 'wildering lies
Where Mediterranean waters laugh to Grecian skies.
