A Dead End

When racing motorbikes
around the Isle of Man
one must be aware
of deadly hairpin corners...

one does not see
until it is too late
to avoid or escape
a life racing out of line.

Many a great rider

A Walk in the Country

I walked by the river
Where it is usually so quiet and peaceful.
Crazy kids on motorbikes sounded
Like trapped bluebottles in a summer kitchen,
But the January light was still beautiful.
Jackdaws wheeled above with their sharp cries
And there were dead rabbits among the puddles,
Victims of weasels or foxes or who knows what.
Suddenly a jet-fighter ripped the sky open with a loud scream.
A gun went off, some enthusiast shooting
At the jackdaws or rabbits.

Dark Water was one of my favourite films to shoot because of Walter. I had seen the previous films he had directed, Central Station and Motorcycle Diaries, and I thought they were great. I really trusted him.

Cul de sac

At the parking
of the Ok-bazaar / Shoprite in Springs
a one-way street runs out
straight into a traffic light

Out There, A Mishap

out there is a crowd of people
motorcars stop and the blinking of the ambulance
look like the eyes of a frightened child,

two motorbikes collide at top speed
two bodies lie bloody on the road
pictures are taken
no one touches the placement of the broken glass
the stains of blood on the leather seat

another realization that death comes

Like Job I talked
with the Lord
and couldn’t comprehend,
where my life was going
and from where
all my misery comes?
