Goodbye Comics, Hello Books

My Superman series had Bizzarro in it
Spiderman originals, Archie and Friends
It was an addiction, I must admit
But hours of reading fun, they did commend.

My brother and I loved reading those comics
We laughed at hilarious Baby Huey
Spent hours on Batman and Robin
Green Lantern's hero stories.

But Daddy did not approve of it and so
He took all the comic books away
Made me read poems and novels to know
Biographies, and so many essays.

Took trips to 'A Tale of Two Cities'
Had fun with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
'Young Women' to 'Pride and Prejudice'
My readings burnt the midnight oil.

Offshore Assets

If the health and welfare of the people are ignored,
As is!
At the expense of increasing entitlements few get.
With a defending of them no one can afford.
Although people are teased by the taste of it!

And everyone agrees,
Exorbitant expenditures have to be decreased.
But...
At Who's interest is the continued squeezing,
Of the pockets from those already in need...
Pleasing?

Those selected to be chosen to defend themselves?
Against the onslaught of reality others too blind to see?
And any exposure of this revealed,
Will become the biggest threat yet...
To those who have pocketed their illegal and hidden,
Offshore assets?

Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, 'Think again, bat man.'

Onomatopoeic

Don't you just love Onomatopoeic words
ones like Crash, Bang, Wallop, and Zoom?
in Batman and Robin you saw them a lot
across the screen would shoot POW, ZAP, KABOOM!
In horror movies you'd hear a thunder Crack
and things that Creak, and go Bump in the night,
noises going Click, Clunk, and Clank,
your heart Thumps as your having a fright.
Snakes Hiss, birds Tweet, Cows Moo,
Cats Purr, Pigs Oink, and Ducks Quack,
Owls Hoot, while the Sheep just Baah,
but if a dog Growls beware it could attack.
Your cereal goes Snap, Crackle, and Pop,
in the frying pan the bacon does Sizzle,
but you've answered a Tap and Knock at the door
when you return your rashers are burnt to a Frizzle.
Yes it's a strange word is Onomatopoeic
but for poetry it doesn't really matter
because you can use words like Zing, Ping, Splat,
Plunk, Plop, Swoosh, Squelch, Splutter and Clatter!

Shushed to Hush Up

Do you remember the first time,
You were shushed to hush up?
To be followed by a sssshhhh!

Were you livid?
Did your eyes open wide?
I know my eyebrows must have arched,
Beyond my furrowed brow!
Looking as if I had a mask on.
And portraying the 'Joker' from Batman.
Overdressed but ready for Halloween.

'Who are 'you' to shush me with a sssshhh? '

Of course none of this makes sense.
Aren't we all adults.
Or pretend we do something that is intended,
And meant?
And not to be shushed...

Halloween

Halloween was getting near-she didn’t know
What her children would wear.
So many costumes- so many super hero s
She could dress her daughter as Cleo
And her son as Nero.

Maybe as cat woman and batman
That sounds like a perfect plan.

Well! Halloween shops here I come
I won’t have peace until they’re done.
As shoppers- we know that the malls can be tough
Five hours of shopping is just not enough.

They finally find the costumes they seek
What it costs- is my paycheck for a week.
The cost of costumes have gotten out of hand
I think we parents should take a stand.

Corporal Stare

Back from the line one night in June,
I gave a dinner at Bethune—
Seven courses, the most gorgeous meal
Money could buy or batman steal.
Five hungry lads welcomed the fish
With shouts that nearly cracked the dish;
Asparagus came with tender tops,
Strawberries in cream, and mutton chops.
Said Jenkins, as my hand he shook,
“They’ll put this in the history book.”
We bawled Church anthems in choro
Of Bethlehem and Hermon snow,
With drinking songs, a jolly sound
To help the good red Pommard round.
Stories and laughter interspersed,
We drowned a long La Bassée thirst—
Trenches in June make throats damned dry.

‘Do you think that I’m Captain Marvel,

Arthur's Tower

Twas a Camelot and a quiver to root it,
One of the wanders in this wonder,
A barge had upright manners alongside it,
The flimsy caress came in with a wand.

Merlin can escape and make more of the agony,
But the king will wish for more stealing
And the knights can not provide,
So tough are the requirements of this ordeal.

To embower his wand is to steal from the king,
Mighty shelter stays at rest,
Mighty gods will please the heart,
And the tall tower repels even the dark knight.

Daylight Dreamer

Here's the half-finished painting of a girl that I started last December
Here's the first three pages of my novel bout I don't really remember
Here's my Martin guitar that I never quite learned how to play
That's the daylight dreamer wishful thinker's way

I had a Harley bike but I traded it off to a feller
For the Astroglass boat that's still sittin down in my cellar
I bought a tape recorder and found I had nothin' to say

Strikes the bell for 5 oclock, uncle arthur closes shop
Screws the tops on all the bottles, turns the lights out, locks it up
Climbs across his bike and hes away
Cycles past the gasworks, past the river, down the high street
Back to mother, its another empty day
Uncle arthur likes his mommy
Uncle arthur still reads comics
Uncle arthur follows batman
Round and round the rumours fly, how he ran away from mum
On his 32nd birthday, told her that hed found a chum
Mother cried and raved and yelled and fussed
Arthur left her no illusion, brought the girl round, save confusion
Sally was the real thing, not just lust
Uncle arthur vanished quickly
Uncle arthur and his new bride
Uncle arthur follows sally
Round and round goes arthurs head, hasnt eaten well for days
Little sally may be lovely, but cooking leaves her in a maze
Uncle arthur packed his bags and fled
