Quotes about grey, page 2

Night on the West River

No moon
To light my way upon the stair,
Cold comfort
In the wine I drink alone.

Black clouds,
Rain,
The hurried flight of birds,
Water flowing grayly
In the dusk.

A rising storm,
Boats tugging at their mooring ropes.
Or s ails full-spread
To take advantage of the wind.

A moving point of fire
In the dark,
The distant lantern
Of a passing boat.

I've tried doing so, for it was never my intention to paint only with gray. But in the course of my work I have eliminated one color after another, and what has remained is gray, gray, gray!

The Greys

It isn't the black and white of it that tells you,
illuminates the picture,
gives it depth.
It's the greys,

Those murky shadows display the truth.
and when you want to learn the truth,
the meaning to the shallow tale,
look behind the door.

It isn't the straight forward facts
that illustrate the how or why or pain
or what goes on.
It's the greys

and unless you've been cocooned, you'll see,
it isn't smug, self righteous, good
that teaches us to empathise,
we learn by our mistakes.

Grey

Grey road stretched through grey rain.
Grey rain fell though grey mist.
Grey mist enveloped all,
all the eye could see,
all the land,
all the sky
and me.
Grey covered all,
all the way down to the sea.

Glimpsed through grey the swell of the ocean,
riding the waves a wind surfer surfing,
chopping, fighting the crests with swift motion
skirting the spray, sail unfurling.
Stopping, I stared at that sight in the mist,
oh how he came dancing over the sea,
right through the rain a state of sheer bliss,
the wondrous frolic rippling throughout me
making me tingle right down deep inside.
That misty image ripped all grey apart

Here, At A Meagre Earth

Here, at a meagre earth, despondent
And listless stare the dull grey skies,
And, as if plunged in leaden slumber,
A eary nature moveless lies.

Alone the few pale birches, gleaming
Mid greyish moss and stubby brush,
Like visions born of fevered dreaming
Disrupt the lifeless, eerie hush.

Grey Grey Morning

GREY GREY MORNING

Grey grey morning
Purim again
Where to begin?
A poem is not just any words-
A poem needs a music of its own-
A beauty-
Lines that are memorable.
A poet cannot just be
What one happens to see and feel
At the moment
A poem must have lines which others will remember.
Grey grey morning
Purim again
Another poem about a poem
Is there one line here worth remembering?

and mind might ask,
why then are brain cells gray? Is it
because the world is just
so wonderful, that they, stunned
and amazed, cannot decide
which colour to praise first?
(Mix all the colours of the paints,
and the result is gray.)

or is it because they feel themselves
so dull in comparison
with the miracle which is creation,
the miracle they (miracles themselves) , faithful, serve?
(Mix all the colours of the spectrum,
and the result is white.)

or is it, because they know
their work lies between ultimates
such as (do they themselves
call them this?) black,

A Commonplace Day (after Thomas Hardy's poem of that name)

All day from dawn to dusk, the drizzling rain;
everything today is painted grey;
and as for me - I shut my heart, alas;
and took that paint and washed my mind with grey…

Outside the window, just a pane away:
the eager soil, the leaves of plant and tree
bathe and sing and grow and shine with praise;
yet why do I not hear that song, in me?

more feeble I than plant or soil or tree;
I cannot even sing their humble praise;
why build a house against the water’s grace,
and leave my wizened heart dry, graceless, mean?

Better today would it have useful been
to be a raincloud; humble; generous;
free of grey thought that idly renders me
less than the least of servants of my God;

Cuculus canorus

A grayish European
bird
two-note call

lays its eggs in the nests of birds of other species.
the family Cuculidae, of
grayish-brown plumage

a slender body.
cry of one of these birds.

A foolish
crazy

cuck·ooed, cuck·oo·ing, cuck·oos
repeat incessantly,
as a cuckoo does its call.

Lacking in sense

It was but just a while ago

remember just a while ago,
remember not too long ago
we were but children at school
as little Jane with braided hair
and clumsy Lee with pimples to spare
Ah, how time grays our heads,
sweethearts,
and life blesses our hearts,
blesses our hearts
O remember sweethearts,
it wasn’t too long ago
we were but teenage girls exchanging gossip
and many ambitious boys exchanging blows;
O remember it was just a while ago
as it seems, just some days ago
and now our children bear children and
our grandchildren are at play in the fields
Ah, how time grays our heads,
sweethearts,
and life blesses our hearts,

In Black Despair

In grayish doubt and black despair,
I drafted hymns to the earth and the air,
pretending to joy, although I lacked it.
The age had made lament redundant.

So here's the question -- who can answer it --
Was he a brave man or a hypocrite?

I played a Melody of Greenery!

A blade of grass
Yearning for a dropp of water
Greyed in its painful penance..
With a pitiful tremble fed it
With a pailful of water
And quenched its thirst in great humility.
O on the nerves the earth
I played a Melody of Greenery!

The Usual Afternoon

we sit facing an old garden
we have tea and some chocolate cakes
we have the usual talk
some jokes and some mindings
of some neighbors
their quarrrels and their conciliations

we notice some changes now
the flowers are wilting and the air
is hot and humid
the dog is sleepy and the car is rusty

we keep on talking and talking
as the world keeps narrower
as the skies get greyer and greyer
it must be the way we chase time
how we were left out
how we wanted to be with it
and love every minute

Merlot

Dear dark bitter wine,
Take these thick damp clover questions,
Cast my pondering, upon the arch of the raven's wings,
Fade them bloody juice to skyward oblivion.

For I can no longer be chewed to the bone
With midnight's hidden longings.
My hazy hazel lenses hang on
To empty hollowed scribbling.

I must cheat one night,
Oh grapes be true and kind,
Away, now raven in flight
The blackest sleep for the grayest mind.

Ten Grey hairs and a silver one

I discovered my first grey hair
when I was Seventeen years old
It had to do with broken up my first relationship

I discovered my second grey hair
when I was Twenty years old
It had to do with the quarrels at home

I discovered my third grey hair
when I was Twenty-one years old
It had to do with searching for work

I discovered my fourth grey hair
when I was Twenty-three years old
It had to do with loosing my job

I discovered my fifth grey hair
when I was Twenty-five years old
It had to do with giving up my unborn child

Total Blackout!

the journey is ending
the head is the first to
signal to me that all
would soon be over

this hair has turned from
black to grey to white
as fast as the memory
is greying into nothingness

they turn white totally white
as sheets of my memory are

but oh god, what a contrast
it would soon be - a total backout!

The Gray Folk

THE house, with blind unhappy face,
Stands lonely in the last year's corn,
And in the grayness of the morn
The gray folk come about the place.

By many pathways, gliding gray
They come past meadow, wood, and wold,
Come by the farm and by the fold
From the green fields of yesterday.

Past lock and chain and bolt and bar
They press, to stand about my bed,
And like the faces of the dead
I know their hidden faces are.

They will not leave me in the day
And when night falls they will not go,
Because I silenced, long ago,
The only voice that they obey.

Star Gazing with You

as a child
later as an adult
in the wild hills
swooping down
the distant sea
star-spangled nights
choked me
by their
profusion
this city, grayed
by smoke
smitten by
festival crackers
shut its skies
to me
till you named
each star
their constellation
their myriad colours
mysteries…
